3 Tips To Become A Better And More Productive CAD Manager

by | Jun 22, 2022

Due to more and more companies relying on CAD software to carry out their daily operations in both Singapore and around the world, the role of the CAD manager is becoming increasingly prominent in the workforce. While one of, if not the most, primary responsibilities that CAD managers have to deal with is managing technology, the truth of the matter is that it is so much more than that.

Since CAD software pertains to technology and engineering, CAD managers obviously should be equipped with a wealth of knowledge in these fields. However, many people may ignore or neglect the fact that the role of CAD managers is one that is extremely people-centric. From managing the team of CAD designers and drafters to meeting clients or customers for their approval on the work, CAD managers have to be prepared for many peer-to-peer interactions.

If you are a CAD manager and would like to improve or maximise your efficiency in this role, we have provided a few tips and tricks to help you.

1. Be open to help

Let’s get this out of the way. Technology is always progressing and we, as humans, lack the bandwidth to keep up with it. The sooner you realise this, the better it will be for you to not put too much pressure and implausible expectations on your team and yourself. We understand that some companies have ambitious design technology needs, and you are driven to meet them. The thing is, no one is perfect, and there will be times when you are drowning with work and ideas that you cannot achieve.

In such cases, this is where your team swoops in and provides assistance. CAD managers are given the role because of their experience and understanding of CAD software, making some of them impose a false standard that they have to do everything by themselves. Do not fall into this mistake, as this belief can cause you to feel overworked, negatively impacting your work performance. Yes, you are there to oversee all the work of CAD professionals to make sure their work adheres to project standards, but at times, it is perfectly acceptable to seek their help and knowledge as well.

2. Explore all ideas

Taking into account what we have mentioned above, it is also important to acknowledge that most of the time, good and effective ideas are invented and carried out by not just one person, but a team. This applies to managing CAD systems as well. The biggest advantage of working as a team is that everyone has different opinions, and can bring onboard diverse ideas and experiences to further improve a project.

Even though CAD managers have the added benefit of having a strong background, ideas need to constantly innovate and be original in order to keep up with technological changes and people’s preferences. As such, we advised not to be dismissive of an idea, no matter how unthinkable it is. You can consider being more curious and encourage your team members to express their thoughts for your next meeting. Ask follow-up questions and try to understand the angle from which they are going for. Who knows that you might find a solution to a problem?

3. Inspire your team

When we say that you should be open to receiving help from your team of CAD professionals, it also means that you should assist your team whenever required. CAD management is an authoritative role, but authority is not what you should centralise your job. Instead, it would help if you aimed to influence your team members to not only be more productive and diligent, but also produce better quality work. Do note that influence can only be earned, not granted, and you can do so by building stronger relationships with your team.

If your team encounters a problem or has a hard time completing a project, take the initiative to step in and take up some of their tasks. Abstain from giving orders all the time and rather, have trust in your team and teach them if they make a mistake. Doing these actions shows your team that you’re empathetic and a willing learner, which makes the entire team more synergised.

For CAD managers, it is important to know that you are in a leadership position, in which many people look up to you for inspiration and advice. While your job may require you to concentrate on supplying and developing CAD software and organising the overall CAD environment, you should never forget to facilitate open communication with your team and give feedback every once in a while to increase the productivity of the team and yourself.
